Can planetesimals form dry?

The ubiquitously seen exoplanets have been regarded as the most fundamental discovery in the area of physical science. How the sub-micrometer-sized interstellar dust coagulates to millimeter/centimeter sizes and eventually forms kilometer-sized planetesimals and exoplanets, remains an outstanding problem. In this talk, I will review some problems in the previous astronomical observational studies and laboratory experiments that led to orders of magnitude systematic errors in the dust mass budget in the natal protoplanetary disks, the dust grain sizes, and the stickiness of the interstellar dust grains that dictates the efficiency of dust coagulation. Then I will introduce my work to tackle these measurement issues. At the end of the talk, I will briefly introduce a new hypothesis for the planet-formation scenario that is based on my observational studies.
