An economical single-shot pulse picker (SSPP) design without dispersion, nonlinear effect and the limitation on the optical wavelength is proposed. This novel design can be applied to a high-fluence laser to select a single pulse which usually couldn’t be done by commercial pulse pickers such as acoustic optical modulator (AOM), electro optical modulator (EOM) and optical shutter. The proposed design composes of a periodic beam blocker, a control unit and a mechanical shutter and has been successfully applied to the commercial high-fluence femtosecond laser with 12 mm beam diameter, 2 mJ pulse energy and 1kHz repetition rate. This novel design could be beneficial to the single-shot experiments using high-fluence ultrashort pulsed lasers.
