This article demonstrates a multifunctional smart window that can switch between tinted and scattering states by changing the electric field strength and frequency. The material includes nematic liquid crystals (LCs) with ionic dopants. Because of the asymmetric alignment design, the liquid crystal produces a special optical performance. In the absence of an applied electric field, the transmittance can be maintained below 2% by changing the one-dimensional viewing angle. This research provides a new type of smart glass, and this design is potential in smart and green architecture.
